Football lawmakers to discuss radical VAR change to improve communication with fans

Referees will be able to directly communicate their decisions after VAR to supporters if a radical law change from football’s lawmakers is approved.

A meeting in Belfast this week will see the International Football Association Board (IFAB) discuss ideas on how to improve the communication with supporters in attendance at the stadiums after VAR decisions are made.

One idea is to allow competitions to explain a referees' decision around the stadium, which may include hearing a final decision and a brief explanation from a referee, although they would not be able to hear the officials during the decision-making process.

The current laws of the game prevent an open audio channel between referees and non-match officials, although this isn’t the case in sports like rugby or the NFL, where officials can explain the decisions to the fans.

This would lead to a better experience for match-going fans, who more often than not this season have been left confused by the decisions made on the field when VAR has come into play.

The changes would not just apply to the Premier League and would also be in affect across Europe and the rest of the world for whatever competition uses VAR, including the Champions League.
