Football finance expert details PR winner prospective Newcastle owners can land amid 1892 pledge

Prospective new owners of Newcastle United would be 'on to an absolute winner' to give fans a seat at the ownership table.

That is the view of football finance expert Kieran Maguire after the Newcastle United Supporters' Trust launched the 1892 pledge as they bid to buy a stake in the Magpies on behalf of the fans.

Last week, the NUST launched The 1892 Pledge - a long-term, fan-led attempt to raise enough money to buy a stake in United when Mike Ashley sells the club to new owners.

Supporters are being asked to pledge money to give the Trust enough capital to enter into negotiations with any new or prospective new owners to buy a minimum of a 1% stake in the club to ensure supporter representation at the club.

Maguire has spoken to representatives of the Trust and after the pledge topped £50,000 worth of donations in its first week, he admitted he has been impressed with their 'organisation and motivation'.

"I am fully in favour of fan ownership minority stakes but my concern is who is going to sell to them because I can't see Mike Ashley doing it," Maguire told his Price of Football podcast.

"It will come down to what the prospective new owners want to do.

"From a public relations point of view they would be on to an absolute winner to say they can have one or two per cent of the shares and appoint a representative.

"It would be fantastic in terms of engagement and the passion and commitment of Newcastle fans.

"I have had a conversation with a member of the trust and they are very organised and very motivated."
