Football fans who hurt police after England Euro 2020 defeat branded 'thugs' who should be ashamed of themselves

Football fans who injured police officers after England's Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy are "thugs" who should be ashamed of themselves, according to the body which represents thousands of London's police.

Forty-nine people were arrested and 19 police officers were injured as England lost the Euro 2020 final, the Metropolitan Police confirmed.

The force said officers were injured "while they confronted volatile crowds" on Sunday.

The Metropolitan Police Federation, the body which represents thousands of London's police, has now criticised people who hurt officers after the Euro 2020 final match at Wembley.

In response to a tweet from the Met police force, which said 19 officers were left injured when they "confronted volatile crowds", the Federation said: "These people should be ashamed of themselves. They are not fans. They are thugs. We wish our injured colleagues well."

Before the final, football fans tried to storm into Wembley Stadium with video footage showing a crowd ramming the stadium's outer fences.

Some fans did breach stadium security to enter the venue without tickets.

UEFA and the Football Association had previously denied reports that fans without tickets breached Wembley security.

In Leicester Square, prior to kick-off, beers were thrown and flares were let off with police having to disperse fans.

After the game, Scotland Yard tweeted: "Our policing operation for the Euro2020 final is drawing to a close. Thank you to the tens of thousands of fans who had good spirits and behaved responsibly.

"We made 49 arrests during the day for a variety of offences. We will have officers on hand throughout the night.

"Frustratingly, 19 of our officers were injured while they confronted volatile crowds. This is wholly unacceptable."
