Football fans warned by Manchester United ahead of Leeds United match as fire rages on

Manchester United has issued a warning to fans as a fire continues to rage near Old Trafford.

Fire crews were called to Chester Road in Stretford at around 3.50am this morning (August 14) to reports of a fire in a three-storey unoccupied building.

The blaze continued overnight and is still being fought this morning, with five fire engines still in attendance at the scene.

Firefighters are still working inside the building to extinguish the flames, the fire service has said.

Manchester United FC's Matchday Twitter account issued a warning ahead of the team's match at Old Trafford against Leeds United at 12.30pm.

The tweet read: "Traffic update: please be aware of an ongoing incident on Chester Road."

The account then shared a Transport for Greater Manchester update, which said: "Chester Road/City Road, Stretford.

"Road currently blocked due to an ongoing fire.

"Stagecoach GM services are diverted.

"Please avoid the area."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service also said: "Crews have been battling the fire in Stretford through the morning and five fire engines remain at the scene.

"Firefighters are now working internally to extinguish the flames and are likely to be in attendance for the next few hours.

"Smoke levels have been reduced, however the road closure is still in place.

"As this incident is close to Old Trafford Stadium, we recommend that anyone attending the football match at 12.30 should allow plenty of travel time."

Nearby residents are being urged to keep their windows and doors closed.
