Football fans have been warned not to travel to London ahead of the England vs Scotland

Football fans that do not have tickets for Euro 2020 games have been told not to travel to London because of coronavirus restrictions.

The Metropolitan Police has issued the warning ahead of the England vs Scotland game, which is set to take place on Friday (June 18) at Wembley Stadium.

Speaking on LBC, Met Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor said that due to the pandemic most events in the Capital were ticketed and pubs were likely to be busy because of the match.

He said: “We’re asking people to work with us.

“We know people want to come and enjoy it, but all the events in London are ticketed only and, with the current Covid restrictions, spaces in pubs and bars will be limited.

“So if people don’t have tickets, we would ask them not to come to London.”

He added that events with large crowds, especially those where alcohol is consumed, presented "policing challenges" but said the Met had a "robust plan" in place.

In past years huge crowds of football fans have gathered in London, in areas such as Trafalgar Square. Due to the health risks associated with the coronavirus these types of gatherings are being organised with social distancing in ming.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Taylor said: “The fan zone is a ticketed event only and is only available for a small number of people to ensure that it is Covid-compliant and works within its risk assessment.

“People gathering around in larger groups outside of Covid restrictions can expect to be policed.”

The Euro 2020 England vs Scotland game is set to be played on Friday (June 18) at 8pm. The match is being played at Wembley Stadium and can be watched live on ITV.
