Football fans bring West Lothian town to a standstill after Old Firm match

Football fans descended on to the streets of Armadale yesterday (Sunday) following the Old Firm match, despite pleas from the police to stay at home.

Police officers raced to the scene at around 5.30pm when they had to close down roads to manage a crowd of Rangers supporters.

Football fans were warned by cops to stay home and abide the current restrictions in place due to the coronavirus pandemic.

While police thanked "the vast majority of the public" for sticking by the rules, pictures and videos emerging from showing supporters skipping social distancing measures for football chants.

Fans were captured setting off flares, and enjoying a boozy party.

A police spokesperson said they were called in to manage the crowd and road closures were put in place for a short period of time.

He added: “Officers received reports of a large crowd having gathered in Armadale around 2.40pm on Sunday, 21 March.

"Local road closures were put in place for a short period of time and roads reopened around 3.45pm. The crowd dispersed and no arrests were made.”
