Football fan surveillance warning as experts say police cameras 'provoke trouble'

Filming football fans to catch them committing crimes provokes trouble instead of stopping it, experts have warned.

A study found tactics including police using body-worn and hand-held cameras at games are “counterproductive”.

Research by Stirling, Glasgow and West of Scotland universities said it is getting in the way of commonsense policing.

Fans told researchers of the study, Lights, Camera, Provocation?, that police officers would rather film crowds than take action on the spot.

The study said: “Surveillance, and in particular cameras and BWV (Body Worn Video) technology to focus on offensiveness, appears to be counterproductive.”
