Football fan loses his hand after flare explodes while he cheers team on

A football supporter lost his hand after a flare he was holding exploded while he cheered his team on.

The fan, who has been identified as Wesley Pontes, was at an airport in South Brazil to see off his club Athletico Paranaense as they went to play Internacional in the 2019 Copa do Brasil final.

He was among 50 supporters at Alfonso Pena de Sao Jose dos Pinhais Airport in the Parana state.

Footage shows fans chanting in support of their club when a large explosion is heard.

Local media report the explosion was caused after a flare that Pontes intended to light exploded in his left hand.

Journalist Juliano Lorenz Oscar, who was there during the incident on Wednesday, said: “My first impression was that it was a bomb because of the noise it produced.”

The camera shifts to show Pontes across the street with a mangled left hand as he holds his forearm with his right hand.

He walks around not knowing what to do until a policeman makes a tourniquet to stop the bleeding before emergency services arrive.

The clip also shows the extent of the gruesome injury Pontes has suffered.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital but media report the remaining part of his left hand was amputated due to injuries suffered in the explosion.

After the incident, Pontes was seen in a video saying: “Tomorrow I have another surgery and we are in the fight, guys. Just bring us the cup.”

Athletico Paranaense won the match 1-2 after winning their home match against the same team 1-0.

They were crowned as champions of the Copa do Brasil for the first time in the club’s history.
