Football could be used to kick off better health among Gateshead's most disadvantaged

The power of football could be used to tackle inactivity in Gateshead’s most disadvantaged groups if a new scheme is given the green-light.

Active Through Football is a new Sport England lottery funded programme delivered by the Football Foundation and is aimed at increasing physical activity.

A report set to be heard by Gateshead Council’s cabinet said that the borough would be one of 15 places benefiting from a total £10m of investment over the next five years.

The programme aims to increase activity levels in people aged 16 + from

“lower socio-economic groups”, who live in the 10% most deprived areas in England.

The east of Gateshead is one of the places the programme could be delivered, the report said, because if its “high levels of multiple deprivation.”

High Fell and Deckham could also be included in the scheme.

Gateshead Council says that if the project goes ahead it will be delivered in the community with residents being “key influences of the activity”.

The specific of the activity programme will, therefore, be confirmed once each programme is devised.

The authority’s cabinet is set to decide on the proposals on Tuesday.
