Football clubs clamour for resignation of top official who used N-word

Football clubs are clamouring for the resignation of a top official who admitted making a racist remark at a meeting where an anti-racism campaign was on the agenda.

Scott Robertson, General Secretary of the Scottish Junior Football Association's West Region,  sent out a blanket emailed apology to clubs this afternoon after using the phrase 'n***** in the woodpile' at a on Thursday night.

In the email, Robertson apologises unreservedly for the comment, adding: "I trust clubs will accept this is as sincerely as it is given."

But the Irvine Herald has already seen replies from half a dozen clubs - all of which reject the apology out of hand.

Some are demanding Robertson resigns immediately or be removed from his position.

And a source warned that if the SJFA hierarchy fail to act, it could lead to clubs calling for 'a clear out at all levels'.

"It's now been over 24 hours and although there's been a half-hearted apology email, which lots of clubs have refused to accept, this now falls on the laps of the West Region chairman Matt Bamford and SJFA Secretary Tom Johnston, said the source.

"If they continue to harbour this man and his views then it's time for a clear out at all levels."

Robertson made the offensive comment at a quarterly meeting of West Region clubs – during a discussion on Junior teams joining the SPFL football pyramid.

It was made in reference to the East of Scotland League being an obstacle to the pyramid.

The meeting had began with Show Racism the Red Card literature being handed out to all in attendance. Below is a copy of a letter given to each delegate.

SJFA secretary Tom Johnston confirmed earlier today that a full investigation will be carried out.
