Football club's 'concern' after homophobic slur is posted on ex-Swansea City player's Twitter

An ex-Swansea City footballer now assistant club manager of a team in Port Talbot has been called out over a homophobic slur posted on his Twitter page.

The slur was posted on Andrew Mumford's personal Twitter account on November 23.

In the comment section following a Twitter post, Mr Mumford's account posted, "what a fa**ot", along with three laughing emojis in response to another Twitter user. Following a backlash on the social media site, Mr Mumford's account has since been deleted.

The 40-year-old is currently assistant manager of Trefelin Boys & Girls Club (Trefelin BGC) based in Port Talbot.

A spokesman for the club said the comment was of "concern" and that Mr Mumford had been spoken to in connection with it.

The Twitter user who said he received the comment from Mr Mumford's account, said that while the post might not have been intentionally homophobic, the language used could still have had an impact on young players in the club.

Ian, who did not want his surname used, said: "I have two children of that age and I know how hard it can be for people in that industry and that sport to come out. There is no doubt there will be people in that club who are gay, so for them to see that it could have an adverse effect."

He said the word might not have been intended in a homophobic way.

But he added: "Trefelin BGC have been fantastic dealing with it and they clearly understand the severity of it and what effect that can have on the people at the club."

A spokesman from Trefelin BGC said: "Trefelin BGC are aware of comments made via a personal social media account belonging to one of its first team management staff. The matter, although not related to football, is of concern and the club has spoken to the member of staff as well as person the comments were directed to. Trefelin BGC is an inclusive community club and the comments made do not reflect our values."

Mr Mumford has been approached for comment.
