Football chiefs urged to scrap cup competitions to finish Premier League season

Former England midfielder Jermaine Jenas has called for cup competitions to be abandoned this season after the Premier League and English Football League suspended all matches until 3 April at the earliest.

However, it is understood that this date is ambitious and further setbacks are expected.

UEFA is set to meet in a video conference on Tuesday to decide whether to call off Euro 2020, which is due to start on 12 June.

Then Premier League clubs will meet on Thursday to determine the best course of action in light of UEFA's decision.

And Jenas believes that the leagues must take priority over cup competitions, telling the Football Daily Podcast : "We have to think smaller right now.

FA chairman Greg Clarke previously admitted he fears the season will not finish (X03807)

"Get rid of this season's cup competitions and finish the league when we can, even if it means moving the Euros to 2021.

"I do think the domestic leagues are the most important. It's impossible to please everybody, and only 50% of the Premier League clubs would be happy if the league was to finish right now.

" Liverpool would miss out on the title and Sheffield United and Wolves would not be able to qualify for the Champions League.

"Promotion from the Championship and relegation from the Premier League is huge financially, so that is why I say the cup competitions might have to take the hit."

League One and League Two clubs are set to suffer most from a lack of match-day income in light of the suspensions, and Jenas added that he would like to see Premier League clubs help sides lower down the football pyramid.

"The Premier League earns so much money, they should find a way to get through this difficult period," he said. "But if you go down the leagues there are some clubs who probably could not survive six months."

"They would probably vanish and that is where the big responsibility lies. Hopefully they are looked after."
