Football agent charged after pub attack left man in his 50s in hospital

Football agent James Featherstone has been charged with wounding with intent after hospitalising a man in his 50s following an attack in a pub toilet.

Featherstone owns OmniSports agency and represents a host of high-profile football figures, including Man Utd's Chris Smalling and Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk .

The 39-year-old is believed to have attended a voluntary interview with investigating officers after the Greater Manchester Police released images of two men in an identity appeal following the incident.

One of those men was Featherstone, who has since been charged along with Benjamin Cowgill, 38, under section 18, as reported by the Mail .

Both men are now due to appear in court at Manchester and Salford Magistrates on November 5.

The incident occurred on March 8 this year when the victim entered the mens' toilets of the Stamford Arms village pub in Bowdon, near Altrincham.

At around 9pm the victim was assaulted in the toilets, leaving him with a deep cut to his scalp and eyebrow.

Detective Constable Gareth Richards said at the time of appealing for witnesses: "This was a nasty assault that left a man needing hospital treatment.

"He has since recovered from his injuries and we’re determined to find the people who have attacked him."

Featherstone - who is a former professional footballer-turned investment banker - contacted the police after the launch of the appeal.

A spokesman for GMP said: "Two men have been charged after a man was attacked in Trafford. James Featherstone and Benjamin Cowgill have both been charged with section 18 wounding with intent.

"The men will appear at Manchester & Salford Magistrates Court on Tuesday 5 November 2019. At around 9pm on Friday 8 March 2019 a man in his 50s was attacked after entering the gents’ toilets at the Stamford Arms in Bowdon."

Featherstone also represents Sheffield Utd pair Chris Basham and George Baldock, as well as Cardiff duo Joe Bennett and Neil Etheridge.
