Price was dominating the bout when he connected with a right hand counter in the fifth round which appeared to have Ali in some trouble.

He reacted by wrestling Price to the canvas where he bit the Liverpudlian on the midriff, leaving a visible mark on his torso.

The referee, Mark Lyson, who had earlier docked Ali a point for hitting the back of Price’s head, immediately disqualified him.

Ali has now had boxing licence suspended pending a British Boxing Board of Control hearing.

Promoter Eddie Hearn tweeted after the fight: "Rule #1. Don’t bite a Scouser in Liverpool."

Speaking after his victory, Price said: "It's a disappointing way to win. He did a couple [of bites] early on and completely lost his head.

"I'm not too pleased with my own performance, but the job's done either way."
