Footage shows 'Wally the walrus' on Valentia Island, Kerry, in rare sighting on Irish shores

Footage shows a giant arctic walrus resting on a Valentia Island shore in Co Kerry after it is believed the animal floated here sleeping on an iceberg.

Named locally as 'Wally the walrus, the animal has caused a stir online after first being spotted on Sunday afternoon by Alan Houlihan and his daughter Muireann.

The young walrus was first spotted in the water before he climbed on to a rock to relax in Loc an Éisc near Glanleam beach.

The footage above from Aisling Quigley and her brother Adam was taken "off the beaten track" and shows the walrus lying on its side as waves crash against the rocks behind him.

Aisling Quigley, of WIld Atlantic Boats, told the Irish Mirror: "He seems to be very tired and confused as to where he is.

"There has been no sign of him yet today but we believe he is feeding on fish in the harbour,"

It is believed the animal will stay in the area for a few days to regain its stamina before making his way back home.

Quigley added: "It is very rare for a walrus to arrive here, the locals have joked that it will be Valentia's version of Fungi.

"Of course it is exciting to have him here but speaking from a fishing business perspective, myself in Wild Atlantic Boats who organises angling trips, sightseeing leisure trips and lobster potting, it wouldn't be great for our fish stock if he were to stay long term,

"We wouldn't have much fish left to catch."
