Footage shows the moment police find pubgoers hiding in wardrobe during lockdown raid

Police footage shows the moment two drinkers were found hiding in a wardrobe above a pub that was serving customers despite the lockdown.

Officers raided the Pitsmoor Hotel in Sheffield, after receiving reports that it was ignoring an order to close as part of the nation's fight to tackle the deadly virus.

The pub was stripped of its licence on Tuesday by Sheffield City Council, the BBC reports.

The 50-second clip shows police searching the premises before coming across the wardrobe where the pair were hoping to avoid detection.

An officer says: "I'm going to check the wardrobe, I'm going to, I'm going to."

As the wardrobe is opened he tells his colleague: "Other side, other side.

"Right there's a person there, there's a person there."

Two people step out of the wardrobe and he tells them they shouldn't be living at the pub to which someone says "they're not"

He then asks them: "How many more? Just be truthful with me, I rather get it over and done with."

A woman's voice is heard saying it's just two of them.

The officer then tries to open another door but it appears to be stuck and he suspects someone is holding the door from the other side.

The door is opened and it appears there is no one in the room.

The raid took place on April 24 and the pub was served with a prohibition order from South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield City Council.

However when officer returned the next day, following reports they were continuing to serve customers, they found people were on the roof "to make it look like no-one was inside", a report to the council licensing committee stated.

A second pub called The Staffordshire Arms has also had its licence removed as both drinking premises were licensed to Paul Greasby.

In March, the government ordered that pubs, restaurants and all other non-essential businesses most close to reduce the risk of spread of Covid-19.

Business owners could be given a prohibition notice and fined if they ignored the order and face potentially unlimited fines.
