Footage shows suspected drink driver trying to drive through wall of police near Aintree

Dramatic footage shows police officers swarming a car to form a human barricade after a suspected drink driver tried to ram through them.

Despite dozens of brave officers creating a wall to stop them, the driver continued to ram police, forcing officers to smash a window and deploy a taser.

The drama started after a member of the public first reported that  a man was drink driving to a passing traffic officer near Aintree.

After stopping the silver BMW, the driver refused to get out and drove through a red light before smashing into another car.

A swarm of police who were nearby policing at Aintree racecourse rushed to the scene around 8.30pm on Friday and created a human barricade around the car.

Matt Porter, who was driving past when the incident happened, told the ECHO : "There was a police car in front of it [the car] and about 30 police officers swarming towards the car and they were smashing the windows trying to get the driver out."

Footage shows at least 20 officers surrounding the car as it tries to repeatedly drive through them.

Officers are seen using batons to hit the car and smash windows.

Merseyside Police confirmed that after breaking the windows a Taser was deployed.

A 56-year-old man, the driver of the car, was arrested on a number of offences, Merseyside Police told the ECHO .

The driver was taken to Fazakerley Hospital and has since been discharged and taken in to police custody for questioning.

He has been arrested on suspicion of fail-to-stop, dangerous driving, unfit to drive through drink/drugs, attempted wounding of a police officer.
