Footage shows six people being rescued from Sandymount Strand after tide traps them on sand bank

Six walkers were rescued at Sandymount Strand after the incoming tide trapped them on a sand bank this afternoon.

Witnesses told Dublin Live that the group "weren't in too much trouble" but had managed to get themselves cut off from the shore without noticing.

The Irish Coast Guard praised the group for "not panicking" as a lifeboat sailed out and brought the six back to land.

They said: "Irish Coast Guard - Dun Laoghaire along with RNLI Dun Laoghaire Lifeboat Station ILB rescued 6 persons who were cut off by tide on Sandymount strand this afternoon.

"All persons were recovered from the sandbar by the ILB crew and safely brought to Irish Coast Guard - Dun Laoghaire crew waiting at Poolbeg beach.

"They acted correctly by dialling 112/999 immediately and not panicking.

"Remember if you see anyone in difficulty in or near the water, dial 112/999 or VHF channel 16 immediately and ask for the Coast Guard."
