Rescuers pull unconscious driver from burning car in California

The dramatic rescue of a driver from the burning wrecking of his car has been captured on video.

The footage shows California Highway Patrol officers and bystanders pulling a man through the car's sunroof while the vehicle, engulfed in flames, lies on its side.

Four people were trying to remove the unconscious man from the car, while others tried to extinguish the fire to protect the driver and his rescuers.

It took several seconds to get the 24-year-old man, Dson Woods, away from the burning wreckage.

According to California Highway Patrol's (CHP) San Bernardino unit, the four-vehicle crash happened on a highway near San Bernardino.

Mr Woods' Lexus overturned and came to rest on its side. A passenger was able to get out of the wreckage, but Mr Woods was unconscious.

"CHP officers responded to the scene and immediately spotted Woods through the open sun roof," CHP said in a statement.

"The CHP officers, without hesitation, ran to the burning vehicle and despite the extreme heat from the flames, selflessly extricated Woods from the vehicle."
