Footage shows 'proof' Liverpool's Roberto Firmino was onside - and VAR Martin Atkinson changed his mind

Former Everton striker and Sky Sports pundit Andy Gray hasn't exactly been the darling of Liverpool supporters in recent times.

But the outspoken Scot may well have find greater acceptance among the Anfield faithful with his verdict on events at Villa Park on Saturday.

Gray, who had two spells with Aston Villa during his playing days, is now working for beIN SPORTS.

And his analysis of Roberto Firmino's disallowed goal during the first half suggests Martin Atkinson, the VAR for the game, changed his mind when determining if the original decision to flag the Liverpool striker offside was correct.

"To my naked eye, that knee (of Villa defender Tyrone Mings) is playing all of him onside," said Gray, when viewing the clip that was released showing how the decision was reached. "I can see that.

"When they first calibrate it, and they do it and 'oh, wait a minute, he's still onside, let's do it again'.

"They do it again, and lo and behold, it comes up that he's offside in the second calibration and suddenly he's offside.

Blood Red: Jurgen Klopp discusses Firmino's VAR 'offside' goal

"That should have been a goal, end of. My naked eye can see that knee is playing every part of Roberto Firmino onside and I don't need calibration to tell me otherwise."

Gray also points out the angle drawn from Firmino's now infamous armpit to the ground is not parallel with the one for the line used referencing Mings' knee.

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith later admitted he believed the goal should have stood, while Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp has called for greater clarity from VAR.

The decision to disallow Firmino's goal ultimately had no bearing on the outcome of the game, with the Reds fighting back from being behind at half-time to win 2-1.
