Footage shows police swoop on car and light up area like 'Christmas'

A number of police vehicles swooped around a car following a pursuit in Wirral.

On Sunday at around 7.30pm, officers spotted a suspected stolen Ford Kuga at Gayton roundabout in Wirral.

But when officers tried to pull over the car, the people inside failed to stop and drove off at speed.

A pursuit was then authorised and a number of police vehicles and a helicopter followed the car which went through red traffic lights and was speeding.

A video captured by one eyewitness shows a number of police cars stopped near The Croft Retail and Leisure Park in Bromborough.

According to the woman, everything was 'stood quietly' at the red lights until 'everything turned blue, like Christmas lights'.

She said: "Four or five police vehicles, very smooth performance by Merseyside police. If I say so myself.

"Wouldn't have known they were there and the car in question had no chance to even try and get away.

"Must have been bad whatever they have done wrong as two police cars joined after."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said the suspected stolen car collided with a wall on Greendale Road in Port Sunlight and a man was detained nearby, having attempted to make off.

Police believe the car was stolen from the Netherton area last month.

A 24-year-old man from Birkenhead was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle; dangerous driving; and failing to stop and he remains in custody.

Enquiries are ongoing to identify any other occupants.
