Footage shows mass hammer and knife brawl on Salford street - it sparked a huge police investigation amid reports of shots being fired

Shocking footage shows an armed brawl on the streets of Salford.

The violent incident sparked a huge police investigation amid reports of shots being fired.

Police said around 20 men were involved. Some were armed.

Weapons including a knife and a hammer have been seized.

Greater Manchester Police said they received reports of a 'firearm discharge', but are yet to find evidence to confirm it.

Blackfriars Road and surrounding streets remained closed off for hours after the fracas, which happened at about 10.15pm on Friday (February 12).

Armed cops were scrambled to the scene, near Salford's border with Manchester, witnesses said.

Officers arrested five men - aged 44, 42, 40, 33 and 31.

They were all detained on suspicion of affray.

No injures were reported, GMP said.

Footage obtained by the Manchester Evening News shows the incident unfold in the street.

One person appears to lunge at another person twice and strike out at the same man.

A resident who lives nearby said they heard a 'big commotion' when a group started fighting.

After someone shouted that police had been called, some people left, but fighting continued between others, the resident said.

Another person said he saw armed officers attending on Friday night.

A white car was removed from the scene, they added.

Investigations continued on Blackfriars Road and surrounding streets today (Saturday).

Blackfriars Road was cordoned off, as was King Street and Garden Lane.

Officers from GMP's Tactical Aid Unit conducted searches within the cordon to look for evidence.

They also examined streets around a building site where a new apartment block is being built.

Bins were searched by cops.

As well as recovering weapons, police also seized two cars.

A GMP spokesman said: "Police were called at 10.15pm on Friday 12 February to a report of a disturbance involving around 20 men - some with weapons - in an alleyway off Blackfriars Road, Salford.

"Five men - aged 44, 42, 40, 33 and 31 - were soon after arrested on suspicion of affray.

"Two cars were recovered and a knife and hammer were found and seized from one of the vehicles.

"No injuries have been reported.

"A scene remains in place as enquiries continue."
