Footage shows M8 footbridge demolition in Glasgow as motorway closed for 12 hours

Footage by Glasgow City Council has been released showing the demolition of the M8 footbridge over Sighthill.

The stretch of motorway was closed both eastbound and westbound for 12 hours from 10pm till 10am on August 1 to facilitate the works.

The crew described the 12-hour closure as the "biggest challenge" of the closure, as it was "quite a tight time-span".

BAM Nuttall, who are overseeing the project, removed the 80 tonne structure in time, ensuring that the major motorway could reopen by 10am on August 2.

Paul Snape of S Evans and Sons said: "It's got to be open on time. There's no ifs and buts, we definitely will have it open."

The footbridge, which connected Baird Street in Glasgow city centre to the Sighthill area, will be replaced with a landmark new pedestrian and cycle bridge.

The new connection will provide a sustainable transport corridor between central and north Glasgow as part of a the landmark development in the north of the city.  The project is due to be completed in late 2021.
