Footage shows horrific violence break out in Cork as one man rushed to hospital with stab wounds

This is the horrific moment a violent attack broke out in Cork city centre on Thursday with one man brought to hospital with stab wounds to the head.

The man was rushed to Cork University Hospital after the horrific incident that took place on the city's busiest street, Corkbeo.ie reports.

It is understood the incident kicked off after the victim was approached by both a man and a woman outside AIB on the street.

The man was then apparently attacked, receiving a cut to the head, before his attacker fled towards a taxi nearby.

The taxi locked its doors however and the victim approached his attacker before a fight broke out in the street.

The men were filmed throwing punches at each other at the taxi rank as blood gushed from the victim's head.

The attacker then fled while the bloodied man later collapsed outside the Savoy where two women tried to help.

Emergency Services rushed to the street and three crime scenes were sealed off for forensic examination.

The victim was rushed to hospital where his injuries are believed to be serious but not life threatening.

The victim, in his 20s, is believed to be from the Gurranabraher area of the city.

A garda spokesperson said the scene is preserved for a technical examination.

She said: "Gardaí are currently at the scene of an incident on Patrick Street in Cork city. The incident occurred at approximately 3.45pm on Thursday, 8th October 2020.

"A male, details currently unknown, has been taken to Cork University Hospital with what are believed to be serious injuries.

"The scene is currently preserved for a technical examination.

"Investigations are ongoing."

Sinn Fein TD Thomas Gould has called for an increase in garda funding and said: "For this to have happened in broad daylight on the city's busiest street will have shaken many people."

“I have been calling on the government to increase Garda funding to Cork city for too long now. It was only a matter of time before a serious incident such as this happened.

"We need a strong Garda presence on Cork city streets.

“There now needs to be an immediate response to this incident. We need to see Gardai on the streets to ease people’s fears. People need to feel safe coming into Cork city.”
