Footage shows ferocious waves in Irish sea as swimmer braves the waters during yellow wind warning

Footage shows ferocious winds smashing the Irish coast as a swimmer braves the waters during a status yellow wind warning.

The weather warning was issued by Met Eireann for the entire country as winds up to 100km/h cause power outages across Ireland.

One swimmer braved the waters at Bull Wall on Bull Island, Dublin while walkers braced themselves against the strong winds on Friday afternoon.

Thousands have been left without power across the country as "unseasonable" winds lash Ireland.

The west, northwest and south have all been badly hit with areas in Mayo, Leitrim, Galway and Cork affected by faults.

Kerry, Clare, Donegal, Sligo, Mayo and Galway had all been issued with warnings on Thursday - but Met Eireann extended the Status Yellow warning to the whole of the Republic at 11am this morning.

The national forecaster's alert will be in effect until 9pm tonight.

100km/h winds will now hit all of Leinster and Munster, as well as Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim and Roscommon.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Strong southwesterly winds will give damaging gusts of 80 to 100 km/hr."

Unfortunately the high winds will be accompanied by rain in many places but it should begin to clear late on Saturday.

Met Eireann said: "Continuing very windy countrywide for the rest of today with strong, very blustery southwest winds giving some damaging gusts.

"Widespread heavy showers or longer spells of rain also with sunny spells at times too. Cool with highest temperatures of 12 to 16 degrees."
