Footage shows dramatic blaze that caused six miles of M6 queues

These images show the motorway blaze that led to miles of queues on the M6 yesterday.

The footage captures a caravan fire on the southbound carriageway that led to significant disruption.

It burst into flames just before 10am, prompting a response from the emergency services.

The incident happened close to the service station at Charnock Richard, between Junction 28, for Leyland, and Junction 27, for Standish.

The fire ripped through the vehicle, with footage showing a plume of smoke rising from the roadside blaze.

While the carriageway remained open, lane closures led to delays of more than an hour.

Highways England traced the tailbacks a full six miles at the height of the delays.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service sent three fire engines from Chorley and Leyland, as well as one from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service’s Wigan station.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and remained in attendance for 90 minutes, but the resulting congestion continued into the afternoon.
