Footage shows devastating blaze as it rips through iconic Scottish Crannog Centre

A devastating blaze has ripped through and completely destroyed the iconic Scottish Crannog Centre.

Fire fighters raced to the living history museum on Loch Tay, Perthshire, just after 11pm last night when a huge fire broke out.

Footage of the incident shows the wooden building - a recreated Iron Age house - consumed by flames on Friday evening as horrified locals watched the tourist attraction burn.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney tweeted his support to the team and described the inferno as devastating.

He said: "This is absolutely devastating news. ⁦

"@ScottishCrannog is a centre of such archeological and historical significance and has has such an impact on the Breadbane area.

"I was due to meet the team on Monday and will offer all my support to recover."

Fire crews remained on the scene for under three hours as they battled the blaze.

A video of the fire posted on the Aberfeldy Community Notice Board late last night shows the horrific blaze rage on.

John Ward filmed the devastating fire but noted it could have been worse if it had spread to boats nearby.

He told the Record: "It was such a devastating sight to watch and a massive loss to the community.

"If it wasn't a westerly wind it could have turned into a major disaster.

"All the boats in the Marina (mine included), the lodges and Marina itself may have gone up."

Local residents also commented on the online post expressing their shock at the fire.

One said: "That’s such a great shame; it’s been such an iconic part of loch Tay scene for so long now - I am sure it will be replaced, given time and funding - until then it will be greatly missed."

Another added: "Such awful news - thoughts with all the Crannog team who have worked so hard and passionately."

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 11.12pm on Friday, June 12 to reports of a fire at the Scottish Crannog Centre in Kenmore, Perthshire.

“Operations Control mobilised three fire appliances and firefighters are working to extinguish a well developed fire.

“There are no reported casualties.

“Crews are no longer in attendance, the stop message was received at 00:18 and the appliances left the incident at 01:49."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We were made aware of a fire at the Crannog Centre at Loch Tay by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service around 11.50pm on Friday, 11 June.

"Nobody was injured and enquiries will be carried out to establish the full circumstances, though there is nothing at present to suggest the fire is suspicious."
