Footage shows bus on fire on Shankill Road after shocking petrol bomb attack

This is the moment youths throw petrol bombs at a bus as it travels down the Shankill Road.

A number of tyres and bins have been set on fire near the interface gates at Lanark Way.

The police closed the gates as crowds gathered on either side with missiles being thrown.

A bus has been hijacked during the disorder and set on fire and a video has appeared online showing the moment that youths throw a petrol bomb through the open door of the vehicle at the driver in a "potentially lethal" attack.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Crowds have gathered at Lanark Way and West Circular Road at its junction with the Springfield Road in west Belfast and a bus has been hijacked and set on fire at the junction of Lanark Way and the Shankill Road.

"Police are advising members of the public to avoid these areas. We would appeal to those with influence in the area to use it to help restore calm."

It has also been reported that a press photographer was assaulted on Cupar Way by two masked men, with First Minister Arlene Foster condemning the assault.

Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill has also condemned the violence saying: "Disgraceful scenes of criminality tonight including a potentially lethal attack on bus driver and assault on journalist. Unequivocal condemnation needed and protests should be called off immediately - police need support not politicking."

Public transport in the area has been cancelled following the disorder.

Translink said: "All East Belfast services including glider services are suspended until further notice; All Metro 1s, 11s 12s and 2 Metro services are suspended - until further notice."
