Footage of the Queen giving first televised Christmas speech leaves fans mesmerised

The Queen’s first televised Christmas speech has been shared on the Royal Family’s Instagram account, and fans are loving it.

In 1957, Queen Elizabeth was filmed addressing the public in a luxurious evening gown and the three-string pearl necklace given by her father King George V1 when she was 21, The Mirror reports.

The monarch, now 93, paid tribute to her grandfather King George V, who began broadcasting Christmas messages on the radio in 1932.

In 1952, months after her father's death, Queen Elizabeth recorded her first festive message on the radio in Sandringham, Norfolk.

Five years later, aged 31, she gave her first televised Christmas speech, branding the day as ‘another landmark’.

She said: “Today is another landmark, because television has made it possible for many of you to see me in your homes on Christmas day.”

One Instagram user complemented the Queen and said: “She was so young. She sounds like a baby.”

Another said: “And what a true privilege it must have been to be able to see and hear Her Majesty for the first time. Long live the Queen.”

And another comment read: “What an amazing delivery! Calm and relaxed, yet regal. She is amazing and always has been.”

In her full speech, which can be viewed on YouTube, the Queen says: “I very much hope that this new medium will make my Christmas message more personal and direct.

“It’s inevitable that I should seem a rather remote figure to many of you, a successor to the kings and queens of history, someone whose face may be familiar in newspapers and films, but who never really touches your personal lives.

“But now, at least for a few minutes, I welcome you to the peace of my own home.

“That it’s possible for some of you to see me today is just another example of the speed at which things are changing all around us.”
