Footage from 1999 of old London Road Odeon before demolition is sure to bring back memories

Video Credit: Alan Ditchfield

Those of a certain age in Liverpool will remember the former Odeon cinema, on London Road.

It opened for business back on October 15, 1934 and as well as screening the latest films it would host gigs and events.

Some of the cinemas most famed moments in its 74 years include The Beatles playing there on December 8, 1963 and screening of A Hard Day's Night the following year.

A nostalgic video has now been shared with the ECHO from inside the cinema in 1999 by former worker Alan Ditchfield.

Alan, from Orrell Park, worked for the cinema for 11 years, said: "When I first started at the Odeon it was just a job but it became an amazing place to work and I absolutely loved the place.

"If I say to someone that I used to work at the Odeon people will tell me about the dates they had there or about meeting their wife or girlfriend there."

The footage shows a behind the scenes look in the control room, a number of large screen and stages and a cafe area.

Previously speaking to the ECHO, Alan said: "I remember working at a premiere of Grey Owl and Richard Attenborough was there. Then Samuel L Jackson, who was filming The 51st State in Liverpool, walked in.

"Now everybody's got mobile phones but back then not one person took a picture!"

The London Road Odeon was demolished in 2008 and was replaced by an Odeon multiplex in Liverpool ONE.
