Video shows aftermath of Mexican Mayor's assassination after less than two hours in office

A suspected assassin is detained by crowds in the Mexican city of Tlaxiaco

Video has emerged of the moment a suspected assassin is detained by a crowd — just moments after allegedly shooting dead a Mexican Mayor who had been in office for less than two hours.

The newly elected Mayor of Tlaxiaco, Alejandro Aparicio, had left his appointment ceremony and was speaking to crowds of supporters when he was shot on New Year's Day, the state prosecutor said.

A video, livestreamed on the official Facebook account for the Mayor by one of his staff, shows the commotion after the gun attack and a crowd gathering around the suspected assassin.

The suspect appears to be bleeding, and residents can be seen forcing his hands behind his back as he lies on the ground, while others call for help.

Mr Aparicio and at least three others were taken to hospital, where the Mayor was pronounced dead.

A 34-year-old man, who was only identified as J.M. V., has been arrested in connection with his death, the Attorney-General's office said.

The suspect, who is from the nearby state of Chiapas, was previously a police officer in northern Mexico, officials said. Authorities believe he is the only person linked to Mr Aparicio's death.

The newly fledged politician was the first member of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's leftist party, Morena, to be elected as mayor in Tlaxiaco.

He is the second mayor killed in Mexico since President López Obrador took office last month.

At least 72 mayors and mayors-elect have been killed since 2006, according to Mexico's National Association of Mayors.
