Foolish thief who stole from Coatbridge shop kept returning despite being banned

Supervision was the punishment handed down to a Shawhead thief who stole items from a Coatbridge shop – and then returned there twice despite being banned from doing so.

Quick-fingered Margaret Cairns swiped “cosmetics and baby products” from Boots in the town’s Main Street on February 21.

She was later arrested and charged with shoplifting but persistent Cairns then returned to the scene of her crime twice in five days.

Court bail conditions prohibited her from entering the store, however she foolishly chose to do so on March 8 and 13, leading to another date in the dock.

Cairns, of Cheviot Court, owned up to all three charges at Airdrie Sheriff Court and returned for sentencing last week following the completion of reports examining her background.

Defence solicitor Mark Lutton told the court Cairns, 39, realised breaching her bail conditions was “foolish” and highlighted that his client was a “suitable candidate” for a community-based disposal.

Sheriff Petra Collins sentenced Cairns to a community payback order which will see her under supervision for the next year, telling Cairns this was “a direct alternative to custody”.

The sheriff also informed Cairns she would face regular reviews to “make sure she is engaging with her order”, the first of which was set for July 10.
