Food review: The toastie bandwagon still going strong in Augher

Out of all the food trends to emerge in recent years, one of my guilty pleasures has been the rise of the humble toastie.

What was once thought of as a basic lunch staple in the house has now become a competition of who can produce the cheesiest, meatiest sambo going.

The pandemic also led to every man and his dog seemingly buying an old horsebox and converting it into some sort of food truck.

While plenty of places struggled to survive these often short-lived trends, one unassuming little eatery and coffee stop in Co Tyrone is continuing to defy the odds.

Blink on your way through Augher and you’ll miss Unhitched, run by local toastie enthusiast Conor McCaughey who set up shop last year.

Struggling to think of where to pitch myself for lunch along the Augher, Clogher, Fivemiletown belt on a jaunt to Enniskillen, I remembered this little pit stop has caught my eye before.

On a mild enough day I was able to sit out at one of the picnic tables Conor has set up, and after a bit of chat he brought down an epic looking ham and cheese combo, which came with a little relish to the side.

First thoughts were - you get a lot more bang for your buck on the toastie scale in Tyrone than you would up in the city.

£5.50 for two full hefty squares choc full of delicious ham hock and the cheese drooling over the side, much the same as that coming from my mouth at this stage.

Despite landing down ‘rooking’ as they say down in East Tyrone, I was barely able to finish the full thing, and not for the want of trying.

I topped it off with a smooth flat white - far superior to a lot of the coffee being dished out in many parts of the county.

With the rising costs of everything at the moment it can’t be easy for a wee venture like Unhitched to keep the show on the road - but Conor is doing a great job and well worth calling in and checking it out.
