Food review: Just what the doctor ordered at Dungannon cafe

Love makes us all do incredible things.

Whether it be travelling to the other end of the earth for a long-distance relationship, or compromising on things you never would have imagined, we’ve all been there.

I had my moment this week where I went beyond the depths of what I thought possible for love, and it was in none other than the Square in Dungannon.

With a wedding coming up later this year and in an attempt to make myself look as presentable as possible ahead of the big day, the new year optimism about eating healthy has been extended beyond the usual token January effort.

So I went to a so-called ‘healthy’ cafe this week for my lunch, staving off the craving for a fry up which came very close to winning me over.

‘The Food Doc’ set up shop in the centre of the Co Tyrone town in 2019, describing itself as an ‘independent, family run wholefoods cafe’.

In terms of location in the town, you couldn’t really ask for better and they are certainly doing something right as there are always plenty of people in when I’ve walked past.

The day of my visit was no different, and so I felt a degree of smugness to join the other health conscious folk.

To the food - the menu features a fair variety of breakfast and brunch items, as well as sandwiches, wraps, burritos and a few hot daily specials.

There’s a lot of avocados and the bacon and sausages come in turkey form, but I’m here to try new things I tell myself.

I went for the ‘Food Doc Bap’ which came with the turkey sausages, avocado and a poached egg between a bourbon bun, served with some rocket and a tomato salsa.

I’m a big fan of poached eggs and can be overly critical when they’re not done right, but this one was perfectly runny and went very well with the smashed avo.

I have to say, I’m still not thrilled with the turkey sausages, my body was craving the artery clogging pork. Old habits die hard and all that.

The wee salsa was a nice touch to the side as well and helped with some extra veggies to make me feel even better about myself.

Washed down with a delicious coffee, the best thing about it was that you walk away without that brown sauce filled regret of having just polished off a belly buster.

With an increasing number of people becoming more and more conscious of what they eat, more cafes and restaurants like this will continue to spring up to allow people to eat out without pounding through the calories.

I may not be fully part of that bandwagon just yet, but we’ll not write it off just yet.

The things you do for love….
