Food Review Club: Famous grub critic hails 'very special' Ayrshire venue in viral review

A famous food reviewer has had his say on one of Ayrshire’s most popular venues.

Matthew Davies-Binge and wife Jess travelled from England to sample the grub on offer at the Kings Arms in Fenwick.

Dubbed the ‘Kebab King’, Matt is best known for his video reviews of takeaways the length and breadth of the UK.

Accustomed to filming in the street outside the eaterie he’s reviewing, Matt was inside the village pub to sample their highly-regarded scran after driving six hours to the Ayrshire village.

Cameo roles from Kings owners Mikey Lennon and Gareth Kelly saw them explain to Matt about their recent pub of the year nomination.

Starting with crab with pickled lemon in a chive emulsion, they also had wood pigeon, gnocchi in a black truffle sauce with girolles.

Matt described the pigeon as “melt in your mouth” and “luxurious” and proclaimed early on that the venue “feels very special.”

For mains he described the Kings' Burger as a “proper” burger and was blown away by the chicken salt fries on the side.

While the fish and chips was hailed as a “game changer” with the chips reminding him of the ones his gran would make.

And for dessert, the strawberry millefeuille was described as “unbelievable”.

And he was also full of praise for the Kings' sticky toffee pudding which he said was like being “round-house kicked in the mouth by the flavour train.”

Summing up his meal outside the venue as he gave the pub a 9.1 rating out of 10, Matt said there’s “food in the blood and in the brain” at the Kings Arms.

He added: “Having a pub like this in your local town or village would be an absolute blessing. They’ve absolutely smashed that tonight. The pigeon was one of the best starters I've had. The food was on point.”
