Food product sold in Ireland recalled over risk of Salmonella poisoning

A chilli powder product which is sold in Ireland has been recalled due to the detection of Salmonella.

P & B Foods Limited last week recalled its Heera Chilli Powder Extra Hot 1kg pack after the bacteria was detected in the product.

And the company has now extended the recall to include its 400g sized pack.

A Food Safety Authority of Ireland statement said: "P & B Foods Ltd is extending its recall of Heera Chilli Powder Extra Hot to include an additional pack size (400 g), because Salmonella was detected.

"Point-of-sale notices will be displayed in stores supplied with this batch."

Symptoms of the infection can include diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fever.

A spokesperson for the Food Safety Authority urged customers not to consume them.

Warning the public of the potential dangers, the food safety chiefs said: "People infected with Salmonella typically develop symptoms between 12 and 36 hours after infection, but this can range between 6 and 72 hours.

"The most common symptom is diarrhoea, which can sometimes be bloody.  Other symptoms may include fever, headache and abdominal cramps.

"The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Diarrhoea can occasionally be severe enough to require hospital admission.

"The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness."

A spokeswoman said Dublin, Limerick and Waterford are the counties affected by the recall.
