Renowned food photographer William Reavell's work has illustrated books for high-profile chefs including Rick Stein and Mary Berry. Here, he shares practical tips to help you improve your photography, and find your own style.

During the course, you'll find out how to use your camera's manual settings to capture the colours, textures and sensual glory of a dish. You'll also learn creative ways to style food and props to enhance the mood and composition of your shots. This highly practical, weekend course includes a practical test shoot, allowing you to learn as you go and instantly see the impact of each new skill you learn.

Course description

This engaging and entertaining two-day course teaches the technical and creative skills needed to style, compose and capture mouth-watering images of food. Topics covered include:

  • Camera skills: how to use your camera when photographing food
  • Composition: different ways of creating eye-catching pictures
  • Food styling dos and don'ts from the experts
  • Styling with props and creating scenes
  • Lighting: the different methods, and what they do
  • Working on your style, and developing your portfolio (or blog)
  • Q&A and group discussion

PLEASE NOTE: Attendees are expected to bring with them a DSLR (or equivalent) camera and be comfortable using it on its automatic settings. They will also need to bring along some pre-cooked, pre-cut food and a few basic styling props (such as napkins, tablecloths and plates) to take part in practical exercises.

Tutor profile

William Reavell is a food photographer with 18 years' experience. His work has featured in cookbooks for Mary Berry, Rick Stein, Sophie Grigson and James Martin, among others. William also mentors photographers, sharing his knowledge and experience in the key techniques for taking successful, appetising pictures of food.
