June 30--Food Network's "Top 5 Restaurants" show thinks Chicago has the best burger in the country but not the best pizza?
The new TV series ranked the top five pizzas in the country during Monday's episode. No. 1 on the list? The mushroom and pepperoni pie at Totonno's in Brooklyn. The only Chicago spot to make the cut was Pequod's Pizza, which came in at No. 2, thanks to its Italian sausage pan pizza.
Also on the list: Una Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco, Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in New Haven, Conn., and Via 313 in Austin, Texas.
Honestly, Pequod's wouldn't even crack my top 10 favorite pizzas in Chicago list. I'd rather have Lou Malnati's, Pizano's, Roots (you have to try the taco pizza), Cleo's (flamin' chorizo is excellent), Giordano's, The Silo, Gino's East, The Squared Circle, Domino's (full disclosure: My cousin owns a bunch of Domino's) and even Little Caesars. But to each his own. This is one of those subjects that people will never be able to agree on.
"Top 5 Restaurants" named Au Cheval's double cheeseburger the best burger in the country during a recent episode. The show will rank the best steaks and tacos in the country in its upcoming episodes. And yes, Chicago is represented on both lists, according to a representative of the show.
