Food delivery teacher reaches milestone in his 'hardest week yet'

A teacher who has been delivering food parcels to children during lockdown has reached a huge milestone.

Zane Powles from Grimsby has given out over 10,000 meals but admits it has been his 'toughest week' so far in his mighty challenge.

The assistant headteacher at Western Primary School  made it his mission throughout both lockdown school closures to deliver school dinners to children in need, Grimsby Live has reported.

He has walked more than 750 miles and carried at least five tonnes since starting mission back in March last year.

He said: “Not far off a year delivering free school meals to our families.

“I have delivered over 10,000 free school meals to the doors of our families.”

Zane stepped up yet another gear this week when he began delivering meal hampers to his schoolchildren alongside their regular free school meals.

On Wednesday, he restocked his trusty trailer six times to make sure no child missed out.

He said on Twitter: “What a day – I’m exhausted. My toughest delivery day yet.

“The five hampers turned up and they were heavy and because of this, I took a double journey to every house.

"Six reloads and each trailer weighed easily 100kg, plus I had another 20kg on my back.”

Zane has explained why he makes the journeys on foot rather than by car – a commonly asked question.

He said: “On foot is much better for our families. If I used a car, I would see the families I deliver to. Walking - I see the families I don’t deliver to. They pop out as I pass because they need some help or just want a chat.”

However, his continued kindness has put a massive strain on his knees as he waits to undergo an operation to relieve his pain.

He added: “Knee is much more painful. Painkillers don’t work, cortisone jab hasn’t worked.
