Food closures Ireland: Popular Dublin sushi bar forced to close last month over 'rodent infestation, droppings and dirt'

A popular Dublin city restaurant was slapped with a closure order last month over an “active rodent infestation” which was “evidenced by" mice droppings and bait which had been gnawed by the pests.

And there was such a "heavy accumulation" of dirt at the food preparation area of Shiro Sushi on Moore Street that the FSAI report said ’food including sushi/sashimi was likely to be contaminated”.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t all.

Staff at the Japanese style eatery were found to have no training in HACCP (Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Point) food management systems, a HSE inspector who visited the eatery found in their report.

And no measures necessary to prevent “parasites and parasitic infections associated with the consumption of raw seafood had been devised, implemented or maintained at the premises".

The HSE inspector’s Food Hygiene Inspection report added that “there was no evidence that sushi using raw fish and rice was being produced in a safe manner”.

The inspector stressed: “All of the above posed a grave and immediate danger to public health."

It's been a testing time for sushi lovers in the capital. In October, three separate sushi takeaway joints were closed after it was discovered that they were all run from the upstairs bedrooms in a semi-detached house in Santry.

In all, three enforcement orders were served on food businesses across the State last month.

Shiro Sushi, with an address of 10 Moore Street, Dublin 1, was served with the order on November 12, 2020, but it was lifted just over two weeks later on November 27.
