Food bank donations handed in to Ayrshire supermarket branded 'no use to anyone'

Food bank collection points have become a main fixture in Ayrshire supermarkets.

They provide a vital service in the fight against food poverty across the country.

In fact, over 90 per cent of the food distributed by food banks in The Trussell Trust network is donated by the public.

But a recent donation at an Ayrshire supermarket has reminded shoppers to be mindful about what they're donating to charity.

At Morrisons in Kilmarnock, one person had given them a number of out of date items — one was almost 10 years past its best.

The pot of green Thai paste was handed into the West Langlands Street store with a best before date of November 2011.

Another item found, which looked like a bag of flour, had a best before date of July 14, 2016 — almost five years out of date.

A Facebook post from Morrisons in Kilmarnock read: "Just a reminder that we are grateful for any donations we get for the foodbanks but can you please check the dates and make sure it's non-perishables. 10 years out of date is no use to anyone."

Urgently needed items at Ayrshire (East) Foodbank...

  • TEA BAGS (80'S)
  • DRIED PASTA (500GMS)
