Food bank bosses livid after man 'damaged van's fuel tank to collect five litres of petrol'

A food bank has been forced to shell out for a new fuel tank for their delivery bank after it was left damaged.

CCTV footage captured from Chelwood Foodbank Plus, in Cheadle Hulme, shows a man lay next to the clearly marked van.

The man, wearing a hooded jacket and tracksuit bottoms, then appears to go underneath the car with a tool.

Later on, a petrol container is seen under the car as the man drives off in a light blue car.

David Hird, who volunteers at the food bank, shared the footage with the Manchester Evening News.

He said: "It's pretty low for someone to do that to anyone but to do it to a food bank, there are just no words.

"He put a screwdriver through the tank then drove off and came back later to collect his five litres of fuel."

Mr Hird praised local garage G Mac Auto Services for their help in getting the van back on the road swiftly.

He added: "The local community have been amazing and a local garage went above and beyond for us.

"They fixed it straight away and only charged us for the parts. They also scoured the internet for hours trying to find a part for us as it was unavailable almost everywhere.

"It's back on the road now which is the main thing because it means we can help those who need it."

Manchester Evening News approached Greater Manchester Police for comment but they said they were 'unable to provide' an update, due to 'a number of high priority incidents'.
