Food: A Tasty little number about a chef striving for perfection

Now here's something piquant. Four years ago an unknown company called theimaginarybody took Edinburgh by storm with a show called 100. Since then there has been a deafening theatrical silence which led one to believe that 100 was a fluke. It is time to revise that opinion because this - the company's second show - is a tasty little number about a chef striving for perfection.

Frank is setting up his own restaurant, the Boiling Pot. He doesn't mind the 3am starts, the heat of the kitchen and the endless menu reviews, because Frank is a man with a mission: he's going to get three Michelin stars. After that, he's going to write celebrity cook books, have his own TV series and then retire to a Greek island. But what happens when you get to the top of the greasy pole only to discover that the only way is down? Devised with the company and subsequently scripted, this little show is full of wit, and pokes delicious fun at foodie culture with people swooning over snails blanched in their own dew and lamb cooked in hay from its own barn.

But its real pleasure lies in the way that it melds the textual and the physical, particularly in the first 30 minutes. Perhaps the show doesn't sustain that initial swagger, but it has intelligence as well as beauty. It broadens its scope way beyond an everyday story of celebrity chefs into a thoughtful consideration of the pitfalls and pratfalls of perfectionism. There are fine, agile performances from all the cast, who between them take on many roles, and a fabulous one from Sean Campion as the driven but self-doubting Frank.
