Dave Grohl claims Emily Eavis “hasn’t called” the Foo Fighters about playing Glastonbury 2015. Though favoured by bookmakers to headline this year’s festival, the American group allege they haven’t even been invited to play.
“She hasn’t called – I have not gotten the call yet,” Grohl told NME on Wednesday. “The Foo Fighters haven’t been there since 1998, so er...”
Earlier this month, Eavis said Glastonbury would “love to have” the Foos, calling them “overdue” for a return. Although these comments nudged the band’s Glastonbury odds to 8/11 at William Hill, the decision seems to be dragging on. Unless Grohl is being coyly overliteral – if one of Eavis’s colleagues rang him, say, or if she merely spoke to the Foo Fighters’ management – there could well be other potential headliners that are higher on the festival’s list.
The band’s 2015 tour dates could be an obstacle. Although they are free during Glastonbury’s June weekend, the Sonic Highways act recently announced five concerts across the UK in May and June. Often, major festival headliners are not permitted to play nearby gigs around the same time of year.
Initial rumours regarding the lineup for Glastonbury 2015 had Fleetwood Mac, Queen, Muse and/or a reunited Oasis topping the bill. Of these, only Muse remains in contention: it’s “not Queen”, according to Michael Eavis; Fleetwood Mac announced they’re “not playing it”; and Noel Gallagher said he is only interested as a solo act. Michael Eavis is allegedly now courting Taylor Swift, whom he thinks could “follow [2014’s] Dolly Parton slot”.
Glastonbury 2015 will be held at Worthy Farm from 24 to 28 June. Next year’s tickets have already sold out.
