Days after Hindu Janajagriti Samiti filed a complaint against comedian Vir Das for his alleged derogatory remarks, his show in Bengaluru today was cancelled. The artist announced the same on Instagram.
He wrote, ‘Due to unavoidable circumstances, we are pushing the Bengaluru show. New details and dates soon.’
In a complaint to the Vyalikali police station on Monday, the right-wing group leaders said that they had information that Vir Das is holding a show at Chowdiah Memorial Hall in Malleshwaram, Bengaluru. They stated that he had made derogatory statements against women, our Prime minister, and India at John F Kennedy Center in Washington DC, America, and denigrated the nation. According to them, it was not right to allow such a controversial person to hold a program in a communally sensitive area like Bangalore.
Earlier, in his ‘Two Indias’ monologue, Vir had described two contrasting faces of the country and refers to many controversial topics, ranging from the Delhi gang-rape to the farmer protests to pollution. Defending himself at the time, Das said that it is his job to put out satire and he will continue to write ‘love letters to my country’ as long as he is able to do comedy.
