The Criminal Court has sentenced nine men to 4-6 years in prison for plotting bombings in Bangkok and nearby provinces for a separatist movement.
The six-year term went to Mubaree Kana found guilty of racketeering, criminal association and also bomb-making, because tests found traces of gunpowder on him.
The four-year terms were for Tanmeesee Totayong, Abdulbasin Luekajik, Usman Kadenghayee, Niheng Yeening, Amri Ha, Noraman Abu, Mufta-in Salae and Tuanhafit Duemungkapa, convicted of racketeering and criminal association.
They were 14 defendants in the case. Five were acquitted.
Public prosecutors told the court the defendants planned bombings in Bangkok and nearby provinces from mid-2010 to Oct 10, 2016, and they had met for the purpose in Bang Kapi district of Bangkok, Bang Saothong district of Samut Prakan and Sri Sakhon district of Narathiwat.
Earlier reports said they targeted several locations in Bangkok and nearby provinces, including a Big C store in the Ramkhamhaeng area, Siam Paragon and CentralWorld.
