Fog causes delays at Brisbane's domestic airport

Brisbane was blanketed in heavy fog on Friday morning.

Heavy fog has caused headaches this morning, with some domestic flights from Brisbane Airport cancelled or facing delays of up to 90 minutes.

Residents woke up to a thick blanket of fog over Brisbane, causing visibilities issues across the city.

Two Virgin Australia flights flying in and out to Melbourne have been cancelled, and another two flights flying into Brisbane from Sydney and Newcastle were delayed by 90 minutes.

A spokeswoman at Tigerair said flights would be delayed by up to 45 minutes, but there was "no major effect" on operations.

There has been a flow-on effect with a number of domestic arrivals and departures delayed into the mid-morning period.

Senior forecaster Diana Eadie told ABC Radio Brisbane the fog had formed in the valleys and around the Ipswich area before it gradually moved toward the city overnight.

She said it was odd to see fog at this time of year.

"We typically see a lot of fogs around the winter time, possibly early spring, but to see one in the middle of October is certainly quite unusual," she said.

Heavy showers are expected across the weekend.

Regional centres need better air connection: councillor

Central Queensland councillor and Rockhampton Airport chairman Neil Fisher said fog disruptions out of Brisbane highlighted the need for the State Government to approve more flights across the state out of regional airports.

He said it raised the question of why flights out of many regional airports only went to and from Brisbane.

He called on the State Government to allow more flights between regional centres.

"This is one of the reasons we've been actively lobbying and saying to the State Government, I think you've got you're whole system of flight subsidies wrong."
