Focusing on their own strengths was the key for Notts County says Mitch Rose

Shutting out negativity and focusing on their own strengths was the key for Notts County as they took the fight for survival down to the final day in League Two.

That's the opinion of Magpies midfielder Mitch Rose, who was in inspired form in the heart of Neal Ardley's midfield.

Neal Ardley thrilled with how his Notts County players have handled the pressure

The Magpies cruised to a 2-1 win over Grimsby Town at Meadow Lane on Saturday afternoon, but results elsewhere saw them gain no ground on Macclesfield.

Notts will now head to Swindon Town on what promises to be a dramatic final day next weekend with a newfound confidence after ending a winless home run that stretched back to mid-February.

"We understood the magnitude and the importance of today," said Rose.

"We had to control our emotions and focus hard on everything that we have worked on for today.

"We have got a lot of boys who have got experience. There is a wealth of experience in that dressing room.

"There are players who have been promoted. There are players who have been relegated. There are players in there who have been doing this for ten to 15 years.

"Then, we have players who are experiencing this for the first time in their career.

"It was just about making sure that we shut out the outside noise and the anxiety and pressure that comes, rightfully, from the fans.

"We just made sure that we concentrated on our qualities. We knew that if we stuck to our strengths then we would get all three points."

The ex-Grimsby Town man was knocked off his feet by a ball to the face in the opening five minutes and received treatment on the field, but picked himself up to put in one of his strongest performances in black and white.

"I don't even know what happened," he said.

"I saw the ball coming but I can't even tell you where it hit me.

"It came towards me at some pace, but thankfully I recovered from it, because there are the games that as a footballer you look forward to.

"You relish theses games and you love to deliver a performances, and everybody needed to do that today.

"We needed to get out there and deliver a performance and we couldn't be carrying anybody."
