Our Delivering our purpose report highlights how we use the power of communications to make a better world and shows the direction, and challenges, ahead.
BT is one of the world’s largest communications services providers. Millions of people use our services every day. We connect families, friends, communities, local businesses, public services and big multi-national corporations right around the globe. So we have a responsibility, and a huge opportunity, to help improve lives and ways of doing business and make better use of our planet’s resources. Our technologies are part of the solutions to the challenges of climate change.
We measure and manage where we can make the most material impact. Our products and services help businesses and people succeed. We are reducing our own carbon footprint and our technologies help our customers reduce theirs.
And we’re proud of our achievements – 22m UK premises reached by fibre broadband, another 4.5% reduction in our own carbon emissions, £83.7m raised for good causes partly through BT’s free MyDonate fundraising services.
But we’re ambitious on what we can and want to achieve.
Focusing on our purpose helps us expand our vision and achieve more for our customers, shareholders, employees and communities. We use the power of communications in what we say, what we do and what we deliver. So we’re building on our existing 2020 goals with more ambitions reflecting the way we can best help everyone live and work better.
We’re on track to make sure 9/10 people in the UK have access to fibre broadband by 2020 but we know that sometimes people need more support to take advantage of the opportunities of a connected society. So we’ve set ourselves a new 2020 ambition to help 10 million people overcome social disadvantage through the benefits of our products and services.
And as our CEO Gavin Patterson announced in March, through our new tech literacy ambition we will extend our commitment to UK education. By helping 5 million children with coding and computational thinking skills we will help reverse the paradox of people growing up as great consumers of technology but with little appetite or aptitude to understand how it works.
Putting our purpose at the heart of our thinking gives us a compelling vision to realise our potential. It shows the outcomes of our business are more than just financial. What we do matters. And will contribute to our goal of sustainable, profitable growth.
