The co-directors of the innocuously disposable Crazy, Stupid, Love bring their forgettable charms to an off-the-peg con-romp that wants to be The Sting meets Ocean’s Eleven but comes off more like a super-charged American rehash of last year’s British crime caper Plastic. Will Smith is perennial hustler Nicky Spurgeon who spies in the glamorous Jess Barrett (Wolf of Wall Street’s Margot Robbie) a kindred criminal spirit. He teaches her the ropes, and together they go lifting wallets and credit cards in New Orleans. A few years later the star-crossed couple meet again in Buenos Aires where one (or perhaps both?) of them is planning their next sly move in a world of Formula One cars, ritzy hotels, and glamorous champagne receptions. Can they trust each other? Of course not. Do we care? Not really. As every incidental encounter is revealed to be a carefully planned (and unconvincing) double-cross, we’re left with some splashy travelogue footage, a couple of chucklesome comic asides, and an awful lot of Will Smith’s handsomely buffed chest. Flimsy doesn’t begin to cover it, although Adrian Martinez has fun in a sidekick role, of which he makes the scene-stealing most.
